Before the Mic: Ronald McDonald House, Alex Taylor & Ida Zetterström

The Roots

Long before podcasts entered the picture, my life was being shaped by other things. Family. Community. Cars. The people I met along the way.

One of the experiences that stayed with me was volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House in Tampa. I spent time helping prepare meals for families whose lives had been turned upside down by illness and uncertainty. Nobody talked about audiences, branding, or building a platform. We simply showed up and did what needed to be done.

Those years stayed with me.

When I eventually began writing for automotive magazines, I found myself drawn less to specifications and more to people. Horsepower numbers were easy to find. The stories behind them weren't. I wanted to know who built the car, where they came from, and what they sacrificed to get there. That often led me toward young racers and builders long before they became well-known names.

I remember watching Alex Taylor compete in Hot Rod Drag Week when she was still a teenager. These were years before television appearances and national recognition. She was working alongside her family, doing whatever it took to keep the car running and finish the event.

The same thing happened when I connected with Ida Zetterström from the Åland Islands. Before NHRA Top Fuel and international racing opportunities, she worked as an electrician. During the day she handled industrial wiring jobs. At night she worked on her motorcycle, a Super Street Bike she called Lucky. Nothing about it looked glamorous. What I saw were long hours, discipline, and a willingness to do the work without any guarantee of where it might lead.

Those stories interested me far more than any press release ever could.
